Experience: When I first moved to the United States, I did not know a drop of English. I was lost, confused, and mad, all at the same time. I wanted to go back to Mexico, where I had spent most of my life and where I could communicate with people in my own language.
Thankfully, when I got to fifth grade, I ran into a teacher that believed greatly in me. He entered me into a Spanish spelling bee, but we would practice in English. I had fun and I learned English in exactly one year after moving here. He was one of the people who helped me overcome obstacles that arrived with my language barrier. I soon left elementary school and I moved on to middle school, then high school. I never lost contact with my teacher.
When I passed freshman year and moved on to sophomore year, he asked me if I could spend a summer with him teaching “at risk” fifth grade students how to write a little better. I was delighted at his request and joined him for summer school. We passed the fifth graders onto sixth grade and we still check up on them once in a while. After that summer, I called him every day trying to convince him to let me volunteer with him once again teaching these kids. He told me he liked the idea but this time we would deal with fourth graders. Of course I was up for the challenge and impatiently awaited the summer. It soon got here and I got to once again, help students with their reading, writing, and math skills. Most kids looked up to me and I felt like I had really accomplished something.
I love tutoring not only children, but high school students too. When I was a senior in high school, my writing teacher asked me to tutor her sophomore writing class to help them prepare for the SAT. I can proudly say that each one of the students I tutored passed their SAT’s with a really high score. Because students not only need tutoring sometimes, they need someone to relate to, someone they can trust and someone they are not afraid to be themselves with.
Because my school didn’t have SAT tutoring when I needed it, and my parents couldn’t afford the other workshops, I received a 1350 on my SAT. Thankfully, after a few talks with the principal, we were able to set up free workshops that we, the seniors, had to take care of. Now other students can take advantage of the workshops.
I want to be a tutor mainly because I love it. I can see that I'm accomplishing something and that I'm helping someone else accomplish something. I feel great when a student who I'm tutoring or teaching something new to, looks up and says “wow! Thanks!”
It’s the joy of the student that keeps me going, and the fact that even if it’s hard at first, it will always get better and together we can get to where we want to be.
Hobbies:My hobbies are many! I can seriously say I do a lot of things and I love them all! I like helping my brother with homework and reading to him. I like playing the violin and writing stories. I'm really creative, so I like making crafts. I also know French,
