Education

Eckerd College (with Honors) 2011: BS Marine Science, Minors in Chemistry and Religious Studies

Experience

During my time working in zoos and aquariums, my favorite part of the job was always teaching. I love to help people understand about the animals that I take care of and the subjects that I am passionate about. I also really enjoyed a public presentation that I did regularly with a Gila monster, teaching people about the biology and ecology, as well as safety precautions, regarding venomous reptiles. I have a bachelor's degree in marine science. This field is exciting to me because it requires such a broad range of knowledge. Not only does one need biology, chemistry, and physics, but also mathematics, ecology, and even some social studies. This is the reason that I chose to minor in two subjects: chemistry and religious studies.

Hobbies

I love outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and kayaking. I have worked for a number of zoos and aquariums taking care of fish, reptiles, and invertebrates. I also keep fish and reptiles at home. My last job actually involved working with fully venomous rattlesnakes as well as working with fish. You can imagine that that was a very exciting position! Recently, I began an insect collection and am completely absorbed by the hobby. It turns out that Arizona has some of the coolest moths in the United States! I am particularly fascinated by beetles, especially the larger species. One of the things that I did not consider when I began collecting, but which I really enjoy now, is planning out which areas to go to. Since many insects are very picky about where they live, this is a matter understanding plants, weather, and geology to come up with a good guess as to where a particular bug will show up. I am also an avid martial artist. Most of my experience has been with Liuhe Bafa Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Kajukembo. I have also worked with Tai Chi, Judo, and Kendo. Martial Arts teach so much more than fighting. Obviously, there is a self defense or sport aspect to martial arts, but they also teach discipline, coordination, and inner peace. I like to call it a forced meditation. If I go into a class thinking about a problem in my life, I am distracted and don't perform nearly as well. I learned quickly to empty my mind during training. However, the most important lesson that I learned is that if something isn't working, it is not a good idea to keep pushing and pushing. Instead, take a step back, examine the situation, and try a different approach. Perseverance is more about finding the proper solution to a problem than beating yourself up on a method that is not working.
